Sandbag Floaties Update 11/25/08

Still no word on the transfer but we will let you know as soon as we know.  Thank you for all your prayers and uplifting words.  As most of you check the blog everyday for updates, I check it everyday for comments.  Your comments help lift me up too.  Please keep them and your prayers coming.

Today’s visit started as Leia and I burst into laughter as we entered Lang’s room.  The nurses have resorted to a new contraption to keep Lang from pulling out tubes and getting out of bed.  I have named them the “sandbag arm floaties”.  They look like the arm floaties you put on your kids when they go swimming but they are filled with sand so they are really heavy.  This way he is still not tied down but he can’t really bend his arms or move them around to quickly or too much.  So his arms were straight up over his head and then his legs were bent out to the side with his feet touching.  He looked like a frog or a monkey.  And he was fast asleep.  He looked so comfortable and so hilarious, we couldn’t help but to laugh.

We found out from the nurse that he had pulled out his feeding tube that was in his belly and they can’t put it back in right now because the hole closed up and with his jaw wired shut they don’t want to do another surgery right now.  So they will be giving him his nutrition through his IV.  He had physical therapy again today and he did really well.  With the help of the therapists, he stood up, took a few steps (old man shuffle steps) and sat in a regular chair for almost an hour.  He tried to get up a few times and when we told him no, he then said (motioned with his hands) that he just wanted to look around.  He thinks he is slick.  I asked him if he wanted me to tell him about where we were, etc. and he said yes.  So I explained to him that we were in Las Vegas…in the trauma center of the hospital…because of an accident…and that we have been there for two weeks.  He sort of shrugged and laid back in the chair, content with that explanation.  When asked, he says he does not remember the accident and that he does not know why he is in the hospital.  We sort of have to tell him each time.  I hope that gets better over time.  He wrote more things down today, in an effort to communicate with us.  It is hard to understand some of it and he gets frustrated with us but we all try.  He did ask about the Seahawks.  :)   Go figure!

Tomorrow the speech therapist will be coming by to evaluate him on his ability to swallow, breath, etc.  Then they will decide if the breathing tube is necessary and then fit him for a valve that will allow him to talk even while he has the trach in.  He will also be getting the staples out of his head soon.  He looks so good.  Still swollen but so much better.

On a super happy note, Darian is coming out to Vegas for 2 days to spend Thanksgiving with me and Auntie Leia.  I am super excited and can’t wait to see him.  I will have lots of things to be thankful for this year!

Grace & Peace ~ Carla

  1. Carla,

What a wonderful update! Maybe you should keep some of the “sandbag arm floaties” to slow him down once he’s fully recovered! LOL It sure sounds like he is making wonderful, steady progress which is a blessing. I have another friend who went thru a traumatic experience too and he still to this day does not remember, even though it’s been years. I suppose in most ways it’s a blessing though.

I am so happy Darian is coming to see you! I bet he is excited too!

    Still praying for you all………..

  3. Thanks so much for the awesome updates! We sure do enjoy reading them- they touch my heart-I love to hear of the funny things that Lang does! :) You girls are so wonderful – thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking such good care of Lang! I can hardly wait to see you all again, and especially to give Lang a big hug and kiss! Tell him how very much I love him and miss him!!! Carla – you remind me of how my sister writes – her letters at Christmas are so fun to read – so interesting and full of good humor! You obviously have that talent too! :) We will be praying for Lang to be sent to the best place possible – I know the Lord has a wonderful place in mind ! And that it will be somewhere just right for you too Carla!! Here is a bible verse for you all: Psalm 28:7 The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and i am helped. My heart leaps for joy and i will give thanks to him in song! :) I’m so thankful and blessed to know that you are all in God’s care, and that he will wonderfully provide for you! One step at a time with Jesus! Lots of love, hugs and kisses from Kathy and Rick.

  4. Hi Carla,

Thank you so much for keeping us up to date – I check every night before I go to bed. It’s great to hear that Lang is doing better and I’m glad that you’re laughing. Tell Lang and Leia hi for me, and that I promise that it won’t take another accident for me to come visit next time :)

You are all in Darren and my thoughts.

  5. Carla,

We are very glad Lang’s recovery is going well. We were excited to see you in church on Sunday.

I wanted to let you know how much this has impacted our lives as well as yours. As you are facing the long and painful recovery, I have shared with more than 150 people in 2 weeks that life is not a guarantee and we should live every moment to the fullest! This life is about sharing God’s love with people, and you have been a fantastic role model for people to follow. Stay optimistic and we will hopefully see you soon. I can tell you some cool stories next visit in the ICU.

    Stay Strong!
    Dustin & Hope

  6. I’m glad to hear that Lang is improving day by day. I know it technically bad for him to be pulling out tubes and such, but it makes me smile a bit to think about him trying to be sneaky about it. Tell Lang we’re sorry about his Seahawks. :)
